The In-Between Is Not Wasted Time
There’s a particular kind of discomfort that doesn’t get talked about enough. It’s not failure. It’s not burnout. It’s the feeling of being genuinely good at something, and quietly knowing you’ve outgrown it.
Maybe the job still looks fine from the outside. Maybe you’re still performing well. But something has shifted. The work that used to energize you now just… occupies you. And you’re not sure what that means or what to do with it.
This Feeling Is Information
Restlessness in your career isn’t a problem to suppress. It’s a signal worth listening to. It usually means you’ve grown past the edges of your current container, and part of you already knows it’s time to find a bigger one.
The challenge is that career transitions are rarely clean. There’s almost always a messy middle, a stretch of time where you’ve mentally moved on but haven’t physically arrived yet. That in-between space can feel like limbo. But it isn’t wasted. Not even close.
What the In-Between Is Actually For
The transition period is where you get clear. Clear on what you actually want, not just what you’re moving away from, but what you’re moving toward. It’s where you reconnect with your strengths, examine what you’ve been tolerating, and start making deliberate choices instead of default ones.
It’s also where the most important inner work happens. Because the version of you who lands in something new will carry whatever you haven’t yet examined. The in-between, done well, means you arrive ready, not just employed.
One Question Worth Sitting With
If you’re in this season right now, try asking yourself: what kind of work would make me feel like I’m finally in the right room?
Not the perfect job. Not a guaranteed outcome. Just the sense that you’re somewhere that actually fits the person you’ve become. That image, however vague, is worth following.
Navigating a career transition on your own is hard.
If you’re in the in-between and want a thought partner to help you get clear, that’s exactly what I’m here for. Reach out when you’re ready — there’s no pressure, just a conversation.
